On October 26th, the TEDx Akron 2012 “Unexpected” Conference brought forth powerful speakers with life-changing ways of thought. These individuals each shared their different views, stories and experiences all under one roof.

TEDxAkron, a local initiative, is a branch of TED (www.ted.com), where over 900 of the world’s greatest thinkers and doers share their insightful life experiences through “TEDTalks”.

Their moniker “ideas worth spreading” is exactly what they did at the conference, sharing what one local homeless shelter for women and children is doing to empower every client that walks into their building.

The University of Akron’s “Pay it Forward” service-learning/philanthropy project – funded by United Way of Summit County – was used in the Legal Minefields of Entrepreneurism, a class offered jointly for students in Akron’s law school and MBA school.

Six student groups competed for the $2,000 grant. The student group who delivered the best presentation (advocating for the nonprofit they represent) won the grant. Judging the student projects were Judge Eve Belfance, Paul Perantinides (attorney), and Roger Read (philanthropist).

After hearing all the presentations, the judges made the difficult decision to award the $2,000 to Child Guidance and Family Solutions, a United Way affiliated agency. This team was led by School of Law students Lewis Bennett, Christian Gruner-Vazquez, Kenneth Bailey, and CBA student Kelly Loebick-Frasella. The winning team highlighted Child Guidance’s “sandplay therapy” room at their new building.

The RMH, a local gem that many are unaware of, houses families of sick children staying nearby at the Akron Children’s Hospital. They want families to feel as “at-home” as possible, and focus on the healing of their children, rather than the burdens of daily tasks.

Last year the RMH served 655 families, totaling about 11,169 individuals. They had to turn away 5,149 families.
