Love AkronIn a perfect world, every single person in Akron and the surrounding area would have attended this year’s 2nd Annual Love Akron Award’s Breakfast held at the John S. Knight Center on September 17th.

Not only were some of the greatest local philanthropic, non-profit, ministry and religious leaders there, but hundreds more to witness and hear inspirational stories from individuals right around the block.

The stories were highly motivational, powerful and moving, to say the least, echoing the theme, ‘Together, we can do great things’.

Waiting Child Fund Seeks to Create Change in Foster Care System – 2013-09-25

Waiting Child FundI saw an article in the Plain Dealer not long ago about Antwone Fisher’s testimony before the US Senate regarding changes that need to be made to the foster care system.

Some of you may have seen the movie based on his life. He was born in Cleveland and spent most of his life in foster care where he was severely abused. Although most foster families provide excellent care for children who eventually return home to their parents, this was not the case for him.

His testimony did not talk about better screening of foster parents, or about not placing youth in foster care when needed, but instead about programs that allow social workers to more quickly obtain permanency for youth through reunification, adoption or legal custody to a relative.

Summit County Safety Forces Chaplaincy Center: A Safe Haven for Safety Forces (Part 2) – 2013-09-20

Akron PoliceMost of us are aware that the job of a cop is no easy task, but many don’t think about how dangerous it can really be, and how many innocent lives are sacrificed in the line of duty.

The Summit County Safety Forces Chaplaincy Center (SCSFCC) remembers fallen heroes, as well as offers a safe place for them to unload all of their heavy burdens from the days, weeks and years they’ve been on duty.

A Unique Niche

“Law enforcement and fire are a different profession, they can’t traditionally use the mental health services the public has access to for good, and sometimes not good reasons. There’s liability down the road in certain situations if they go for counseling,” Robert Denton PhD, LISW, Executive Director at Safety Forces Chaplaincy Center, shared.
