Jim is a homeless Vietnam vet who’s trapped in a Catch 22. He gets a pension each month, but due to extreme pain, he self-medicates using heroin, although he clarifies that he’s not strung out. And because he tests positive for illegal drugs, he can’t receive any pain management treatment through his veterans’ benefits. So he self-medicates and the cycle continues.

“They won’t manage my pain because I’m a drug addict,” says Jim (who requested that we not publish his real name due to some of his admitted activities). He gets his check each month, finds a hotel room for a week or two, then runs out of money and returns to the streets. And to places like a local homeless shelter, where we had the opportunity to speak with him and a number of residents.

Fatherhood Initiative Brings More Focused Resources to Summit County Fathers – 2013-10-09

Fatherhood InitiativeHaving active fathers in children’s lives can make all the difference between success and failure for that child.

A new fatherhood initiative facilitated by Akron Community Foundation will combine the services of three prominent organizations to provide more focused education and resources to fathers and families in Summit County.

The collaboration will help fathers navigate the court system for visitation and offer mentoring to help struggling fathers establish responsible parenting skills.

Affordable Housing Construction Helps East Akron Revitalization – 2013-10-04

EANDFor the past 30 years, the East Akron Neighborhood Development Corporation (EANDC) has been bringing revitalization home to Summit County.

On Sept. 25th, EANDC broke ground on Robinson Homes East, a 27 single-family-home development. This will be central to the East Akron Neighborhood Revitalization Plan that will include housing rehabilitation efforts and vacant lot reuse.

“Since 1982, EANDC has worked successfully to strengthen the Akron-area by rebuilding neighborhoods, protecting property values and allowing residents to achieve the American dream,” said EANDC Executive Director, Grady Appleton.

“The Robinson Homes East is our latest effort to strengthen this community by adding new, high quality housing options.”
