Refugee employees prove profitable for local businesses

Many of Akron’s resettled refugees were restricted from working during their time in the camps. Now that they’ve resettled, they’re excited to enter the workforce and form a sense of identity and independence, says Tiffany Stacy, regional manager of employment services for the International Institute of Akron (IIA).

“A lot of our clients come from situations where they were refugees in countries where they did not have the right to work, so for many years they couldn’t work; all they could do was live off the food rations they were given,” she adds. “That has an effect on people; it’s demoralizing. You don’t feel a sense of control over your own destiny. When people get here, they’re very excited to get a job, they’re excited to work for something, to have a purpose. They come alive, their demeanor often changes.”

“Helping Students Succeed” an APS Family Engagement program

Akron Public Schools and some of its community partners are teaming up to bolster the support by engaging more and more families in their children’s education.  Family participation has been found to be a key a ingredient in student proficiency and excellence. Without family support, many students can and often do struggle.

 

Greenleaf Family Center has partnered with Akron Public Schools (APS) as its sponsor for the “Helping Students Succeed” fundraising event Friday, October 21, 2016, at St. George Family Center in Akron, Ohio.

 

The event is open to the public and benefits the APS programs that keep parents engaged with their children’s education.

Three Communities Launch 100-Day Challenges to End Youth Homelessness

Austin, Cleveland and Los Angeles will set ambitious goals to end homelessness among young people in their community.

A Way Home America (AWHA) today announced that Austin, Cleveland and Los Angeles will launch 100-day challenges to accelerate efforts to end youth homelessness in their communities. Selected through a competitive application process, each community will receive support from The Rapid Results Institute (RRI) to drive toward this ambitious goal over 100 days starting September 7.
