Gary Wyatt shares his path of redemption, commitment and leadership

Gary Wyatt has been on both sides of the addiction divide. Speaking to a Leadership on Main audience, the co-founder of North Hill Community House told a compelling story of personal redemption and commitment, and surprisingly to himself, leadership.

As a child, he saw his parents’ struggles with alcoholism and poverty. When he was a student and an athlete at Garfield High School, he did a “little alcohol and a little pot” now and then, he said, but never anything that got him into trouble. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy after high school to see the world, served four years and returned to Akron in 1989.

Everyday Ways Parents Can Be Teachers

After the keynote speech, attendees went to one of several breakout sessions on topics including emotional attachment and how play is a part of learning.

Kandi Novak, Quality Enhancement Specialist at Child Care Connection, spoke on how creating brain building moments for parents can be a major help to children. The talk focused around a tool called Vroom which gives parents tips on how to create educational moments in everyday life.

School Readiness Summit brings together education profession

Teachers and education-related professionals joined together for First Things First and the Summit Education Initiative’s School Readiness Summit at the John S. Knight Center Tuesday, Oct. 25.

The Summit, modeled after a similar event in Dayton, brought people working in the early childhood realm together with other experts from other fields and local professionals in order to improve educational outcomes in the Summit County.
