Did you know that March was Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month?

In 1987, Ronald Reagan issued a proclamation to bring forth positive change in the lives of the developmentally disabled.

Locally, Summit County has made great strides in doing the best they can to serve and include those with developmental disabilities. The key has been to provide supports and services that allow those they serve to live typical lives. The largest entity, County of Summit Developmental Disabilities Board (Summit DD), is a great example of a successful community service, uniting just about every related program for services that come full circle.

Alex Miller, Co-Founder of Akron Urban Gardens, and life-long Akron resident, isn’t just talk, but has put his community dreams into action through the Y-Bridge Memorial Community Garden.

Recently graduating from Akron University with a degree in Urban Planning and a focus on food policy and planning, he has set his mind towards cultivating unity and beautification in Cascade Village through gardening.

“All the issues that surround that –the whole arena – including urban agriculture – has melted my butter for years,” Miller said.

This passion led him and his Co-Founder, Dana Starvazi, in creating Akron Urban Gardens, under which the Y-Bridge memorial falls.

Project Blueprint: Breaks Down Walls, Welcomes Diversity – 2013-03-20

This April, Project Blueprint’s 12th class will graduate since beginning in Summit County in 2002.

The project, part of United Way of Summit County, was designed to encourage local agencies to be more inclusive, responsive and reflective of its culturally diverse community.

“Project Blueprint’s goal is to put African Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans and Asian Americans who have an interest, on board,” Brenda Cox, Director of Community Impact for United Way, and Project Coordinator for Project Blueprint, said.
