Several Generous Akron Community Members Collected Resources for Families Experiencing Homelessness

This December, several generous community members collected resources that were donated to Project RISE. Some of the resources were distributed during the annual gift distribution at Akron’s homeless shelters and some will be given out at future events.

Project RISE (Realizing Individual Strength through Education) is a federally funded, collaborative effort by the Akron Public Schools, local shelters and the Akron community to provide supplemental educational services to children and youth experiencing homelessness.

College and Career Readiness – Schools work on progress through collaboration

The Second to Last Benchmark in Summit Education Initiative (SEI)  Cradle to Career Pipeline is College and Career Readiness.

  • All students graduate from high school with a plan to be employed, enrolled or enlisted.
  •  All students who plan to attend college after high school will complete a FAFSA.
  •  Increase the proportion of students who earn a “college ready” score on college placement tests.

The group’s goal is for every student leaving high school to have a plan to become enrolled in college, enlisted in public service, or employed in a job that leads to a career.

Project RISE 8th Annual Harvest Dinner for Local Families Experiencing Homelessness

 

This November, Akron’s Salvation Army hosted the 8th Annual Project RISE Parent RISE-ing Harvest Dinner for the students and families experiencing homelessness. The Harvest Dinner gives these families and youth the opportunity to celebrate this festive time of year with food, fun and friendship. The evening included arts and literacy activities, parent-child activities, Thanksgiving dinner, giveaways, and entertainment.
The dinner was held in the gymnasium of Salvation Army. The tables were festively decorated with cornucopias and leaves. The room was buzzing with excitement and fellowship!
