Human TraffickingThis New Year is going to bring a fresh, new start for many homeless veterans – giving them the hope and healing they have needed.

On February 4th, 2013, a 30 bed facility run by Family and Community Services will open its doors to homeless veterans.

“When President Obama was elected the first time, a group of people were inspired by one of his speeches that asked ‘What can you do for your community?’ They researched and found that Northeast Ohio had the least amount of veterans homeless beds in the United States,” David Peacock, Drama Therapist, said.

So they came up with this idea.

TEDx Akron Partners with ACCESS to Initiate Community Involvement – 2012-12-08

On October 26th, the TEDx Akron 2012 “Unexpected” Conference brought forth powerful speakers with life-changing ways of thought. These individuals each shared their different views, stories and experiences all under one roof.

TEDxAkron, a local initiative, is a branch of TED (www.ted.com), where over 900 of the world’s greatest thinkers and doers share their insightful life experiences through “TEDTalks”.

Their moniker “ideas worth spreading” is exactly what they did at the conference, sharing what one local homeless shelter for women and children is doing to empower every client that walks into their building.

Local Woman Makes “Pedals for Heroes” Her Lifelong Journey

Cassie Schumacher, founder of Pedal’s for Heroes, is a woman with a passionate purpose: to honor the life of veterans. She is determined to make the sacrifices of their lives echo in the hearts and minds of others and throughout history.

When asked what makes someone suddenly want to start a nonprofit organization for veterans, Schumacher’s response came from the heart: “I think things happen over a lifetime. I grew up with a father who was a Vietnam vet. He was a very respected businessman, active in the community and he gave back to other people.”
